Day 105 – Great Barrington HERO (2026)

Today's journey along the trail was a tale of two halves: a smooth, quick start and a challenging, buggy second act. I woke up early, eager to hit the trail by 6 a.m., and the morning hike was a breeze, covering 3.5 miles in no time. The flat terrain and cool morning air made for an enjoyable start. We even had a little trail magic waiting for us at a road crossing, a welcome boost of energy before heading into Great Barrington.

Great Barrington, a resupply stop, offered a much-needed break and a chance to recharge. I indulged in a delicious bagel sandwich and a cinnamon roll, a true hiker's treat. The town's hospitality and the chance to charge our devices were a blessing. But the real adventure began once we hit the trail again.

The heat and humidity kicked in, and with it, a swarm of bugs. The climb became steep and sweaty, and I nearly stepped on a slithering snake. Thankfully, a fellow hiker, Pokey, offered some trail magic in the form of a Gatorade and a snack, along with valuable trail info. The climb continued, and the gnats became an unwelcome companion, buzzing around my face and finding their way into every orifice. It was a true test of endurance.

Along the way, I encountered a unique geological feature, Ice Gulch, a narrow canyon that added a touch of wonder to the otherwise challenging hike. And then, an unexpected surprise: a medium-sized black bear! The encounter left me startled, but I managed to capture a glimpse of him before he disappeared into the woods. The descent brought its own challenges, with slippery bog boards and a few tumbles in the dusk.

In my opinion, today's hike was a true test of mental and physical fortitude. The bugs, the heat, and the steep climbs could have easily dampened spirits, but the beauty of the trail and the unexpected encounters kept me going. It's a reminder that hiking is as much about the challenges as it is about the rewards. And the rewards, like that delicious bagel sandwich, make it all worth it.

What many people don't realize is that hiking is not just about the destination, but the journey itself. It's about embracing the unexpected, whether it's a slithering snake or a curious bear. So, as I reflect on today's hike, I'm grateful for the lessons learned and the memories made. Tomorrow, I'll hit the trail again, ready for whatever challenges and rewards it may bring.
